Drawing inspiration from the ninteenth century illustrations of Pollock's toy theatres, Susan Williams-Ellis created a series of ceramics entitled ‘Pantomime Characters' which were made by Portmeirion potteries in the nineteen sixties and seventies.
These illustrations acted as a springboard for Wanda and David and took them on a journey from early pantomime to a more serious consideration of the masks we all wear.
The final exhibition will be an engaging experience for all ages.
Starting with their preferred mediums of photography and printmaking Wanda and David Garner have designed a site-specific multimedia installation. Pollocks toy theatres, and related work provided by the Museum are displayed in the drawing room, alongside curated items from Susan Williams -Ellis’s work including Clive Hicks Jenkins sketches and related ceramics.
Pantomime is a common route into early theatrical experience, but role play is not confined to the theatre. As Shakespeare wrote, ‘All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players.’ We choose the identity we present for the audience, the mask we hide behind. Thus, the underlying question posed is ‘What is it that creates our identity?’ Evrah Rose’s film offers a personal perspective
There are a series of workshops and events planned that relate to the exhibition, please see our events pages for details.
